Recently, our Founder Carol McKee shared some thoughts with Northern Michigan Woman Magazine:

What’s the greatest impact Community Cats of Benzie County drives across Northern Michigan?

Our goal is to decrease the homeless cat population in Benzie County and surrounding communities. We work with individual cat colonies, one cat at a time until we have all cats in a colony neutered. That means no more kittens or no more increasing numbers of cats. The numbers should start to decrease over time.

What are you most proud of in the last year?

I am most proud of the fact that we work to improve the quality of the lives of cats. We recently had two very severe eye infections. With treatment, we were able to save one cat’s eye. We had to remove the injured eye in the other cat, but it relieved the pain. We just don’t spay and neuter. We want every cat to be comfortable and disease-free.

How can a person make a difference in your organization?

We have a great core of volunteers, but are always looking for more. We need foster homes for our kittens, transporters for bringing our trapped feral cats to the surgery center, and people to help with washing surgical packs, clean the adoption center etc. If you are interested in volunteering, please fill out an application here.
